The Ultimate Whitsundays Downwind Experience

The Whitsundays are famous for being “beautiful one day, perfect the next” — and June is one of the very best times to experience them. During this time of year, the region enjoys consistent southerly winds, which is exactly why Hamilton Island’s major sailing events are scheduled throughout June.

Expect dry, sunny weather, crystal-clear water, and daytime temperatures averaging between 27–31°C. Best of all? It’s outside stinger season, so you can enjoy the ocean worry-free.

Many people have visited the Whitsundays… but few have truly experienced them.

Beyond the cafés and resorts of Hamilton Island lies an untouched paradise of remote islands only accessible by boat. Imagine paddling from island to island, gliding across turquoise water on a surf ski, chasing endless downwind runners through one of the most breathtaking marine playgrounds in the world.

This is the Whitsundays few people ever get to see — and we’re opening the door for you.

Picture yourself waking up in tropical 30-degree weather at The Airlie Beach Hotel, relaxing in your own private apartment with a comfortable double bed. After breakfast downstairs with the group, you’ll stroll across the road to the beach for a guided yoga and mobility session with your coach.

From there, it’s a short walk to the Airlie Beach Marina, where the adventure begins.

At 8:30am, two speedboats head out into the Whitsundays — one carrying the paddlers and the other transporting the surf skis. Every day is carefully planned around the wind, swell, and tide to ensure you experience the best possible downwind conditions.

By 10am, you’ll be launching from a secluded island beach surrounded by like-minded paddlers, setting off on an unforgettable downwind run through the Whitsundays.

Throughout the session, Coach Luke Horder will be alongside you on the support boat, providing live coaching on how to read the ocean, connect runners, conserve energy, and surf more efficiently. Your stroke and technique will also be filmed, giving you professional real-time footage and feedback to review later back at your accommodation.

Whether you’re completely new to downwind paddling or looking to refine advanced skills, this trip is designed to accelerate your progression. Before every paddle, we’ll break down exactly what to look for in the ocean and how to use the conditions to your advantage.

Safety is our highest priority.

You’ll be supported at all times by Coach Luke Horder and Glen Horder on dedicated support boats, with VHF radios clipped to your life jacket so you’re always connected with the team. Group sizes and pacing are carefully managed to ensure everyone feels safe, supported, and confident on the water.

Around midday, the group arrives at a secluded island beach where lunch, drinks, and dry clothes are waiting for you. Spend the afternoon however you like — swim in crystal-clear water, explore the island, enjoy a yin yoga session, or simply relax on the sand and soak it all in.

At 2pm, it’s time for another downwind session before returning to Airlie Beach around 4pm.

Evenings are all about recovery, connection, and celebration. After time to shower and relax, the group heads out for dinner and drinks at a different restaurant each night, sharing stories from the day while reviewing footage, stats, and highlights over a few well-earned glasses of wine.

This trip is about more than just fitness — it’s about fast-tracking your downwind skills in world-class conditions.

What you learn in a single week here could take an entire year to develop back home in Sydney.

With two downwind paddles each day covering approximately 12–15km per session, you’ll burn thousands of calories while improving your confidence, ocean awareness, and technique at an accelerated rate.

To ensure the highest-quality experience, the trip is strictly capped at 10 paddlers.

The stronger the wind, the bigger the adventure. Some days may involve longer downwind runs, while lighter recovery days are strategically built in to keep everyone fresh and progressing throughout the week. Every day is tailored around the conditions to maximise both enjoyment and learning.

No matter your pace in this Level 3 group, the structure allows everyone to stay connected and supported on the water through staggered starts and regrouping points.

Communication is key. Safety and progression are our motto.

Partners and non-paddlers are also welcome to join the trip. Your accommodation includes a private apartment with a double bed, allowing partners to stay comfortably with you while enjoying the social side of the experience — breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and the incredible Whitsundays atmosphere.
