The Whitsundays Downwind Experience
The Whitsundays are famous for being "beautiful one day, perfect the next." Winter is the ideal time to paddle here, with sunny days, temperatures in the mid to high 20s, and reliable south to south-east trade wind daily. If the wind blows any other direction, then we move with the wind as we have 74 islands to choose from.
The Whitsundays also experience tidal changes of up to three metres every six hours, creating incredible downwind conditions. Wind against tide makes for exciting stand up runners! Coach Luke Horder uses his local knowledge of the wind, tides, and islands to design the best possible runs each day, ensuring an unforgettable experience for paddlers of all skill levels.
Is so simple: fly into Hamilton Island and board the ferry to Day Dream Island for the paddle trip of a lifetime.
Choose Your Level
We offer three coaching groups so you'll paddle with others of a similar ability and progress together throughout the week:
- Beginner Downwind – New to downwind paddling.
- Intermediate Downwind – Comfortable downwind paddler looking to improve.
- Advanced Downwind – Experienced paddlers chasing performance and personal bests.
Our goal is simple: help every paddler take the next step.
By the end of the week:
- Beginners will have the confidence and skills of an intermediate paddler.
- Intermediate paddlers will be performing at an advanced level.
-
Advanced paddlers will experience some of the best downwind runs of their lives while setting new personal best
A Typical Day
Morning
Start your day with the complimentary breakfast buffet at Daydream Island Resort from 7:00am, featuring barista coffee, chef-made omelettes, fresh fruit, pastries, and much more.
Our paddle schedule is planned around the tides, so we typically board our boats at 8:00am and set off for the day.
The afternoon before, using the Day Dream resort menu you'll select your lunch and snack preferences. The resort kitchen prepares everything fresh, ready for the day's adventure. Your food, drinks, and plenty of cold water are stored in the fridge onboard our big vessel.
From there, we cruise comfortably through the Whitsunday Passage to find the perfect starting point based on the level of the group.
Because we use fast support boats, we're able to adjust our launch location if the wind changes on us. This is a true downwind camp where every paddle you are in the right spot at the right time.
That means:
- No paddling kilometres into the wind before turning around.
- No battling headwinds to reach the start.
- Every run is designed to maximise time surfing with the wind.
Getting Ready
When we arrive at our starting island, your surf ski and equipment will already be waiting on the beach.
You'll have time to explore before gathering for the daily briefing with Coach Luke Horder.
During the boat ride to the starting location, Coach Luke will point out important landmarks and explain the course, making navigation easy once you're on the water.
Each session focuses on one or two specific downwind skills, allowing you to build confidence without becoming overloaded with information. Every day builds on the last, creating steady progression throughout the week.
On the Water
We launch together as a group, supported by two coaching boats positioned on either side of the downwind line.
Your only job is to stay between the boats while we guide you onto the fastest moving water.
Great downwind paddling isn't just about catching runners—it's about reading the ocean, understanding water movement, linking bumps together, and choosing the best line for the day's conditions. The passage produces tide against wind and funnel effect hotspots where water can move up to 5 knots, making for a faster run for you.
Throughout every paddle, Luke provides live coaching from the support boat, helping you:
- Read the ocean more effectively.
- Connect runners smoothly.
- Conserve energy, less strokes, but more distance per stroke.
- Surf faster and for longer.
- Improve your stroke technique for downwind paddling power
Your paddling will also be professionally filmed, giving you valuable video feedback to review back at the resort.
Midday
The first downwind run finishes on another stunning Whitsunday island.
Here we regroup, enjoy snacks and refreshments from the support boats, and recharge while sharing stories from the morning's paddle.
Once everyone is rested and hydrated, we prepare for the second island-to-island downwind run, building on the skills learned earlier in the day.
Each session is designed to challenge you while continuing your progression.
Afternoon
After the second paddle, we load the surf skis back onto the boat. You'll have the chance to shower and change into dry clothes onboard before we stop at one of the beautiful islands for lunch and a hike.
The afternoon is yours to enjoy.
Depending on the day, you can:
- Join an island hike.
- Go snorkelling.
- Try some fishing.
- Simply relax on the boat and soak up the scenery.
If your partner or family are travelling with you, Daydream Island can transport resort guests out to join us for the afternoon activities.
By around 4:00 pm, we're back at the resort for you to jump in the pool, enjoy Happy Hour cocktails, or simply unwind after an incredible day on the water.
Evening
At 6:30 pm, everyone gathers for dinner.
Partners and children are welcome to join us.
With three fantastic restaurants at the resort, every evening offers something different, and the shared dinners are always filled with great food, plenty of laughs, and stories from the day's paddling.
By around 8:30pm, most paddlers are ready for an early night before another exciting day on the water.

Choose the right group!
The Beginner Downwind Paddle Trip is designed for competent paddlers who are ready to experience ocean downwind paddling for the first time in a safe, supportive environment.
For many paddlers, ocean downwinding can feel out of reach. It usually means heading beyond the surf break, paddling exposed coastlines, organising shuttle logistics, and relying on limited support in changing conditions. Finding the right people and safety backup can be difficult, which often prevents paddlers from building real downwind experience.
This trip changes that.
In the stunning Whitsundays, you’ll paddle alongside other participants, with experienced guides, support boats next to you, and everyone connected via VHF radios for constant communication and safety. The conditions here are ideal for learning, with predominantly wind-generated waves that allow you to develop genuine downwind skills without the intimidation of large ocean swell.
We keep this group in manageable conditions where you can focus on learning how to read and connect runs. You’ll discover the feeling of linking wave after wave as your ski accelerates downwind, and we’ll coach you through the key techniques that make downwind paddling so rewarding.
You’ll learn:
- How to position yourself on a run
- How to connect bumps efficiently
- When to apply power and when to conserve energy
- How to turn and trim your surf ski across the wave face
- How to manage speed, glide, and drag forces
- How to move safely and confidently in open-water conditions
As the week progresses, your confidence and understanding of downwind paddling will grow dramatically. With daily coaching, supportive conditions, and plenty of water time, you’ll leave the Whitsundays not only with improved skills, but with the confidence to safely enjoy ocean downwind paddling well into the future.

Intermediate Downwind Camp
Is designed for paddlers who already feel comfortable in the ocean and have some experience with ocean racing or downwind paddling, but want more consistency, speed, and confidence in real downwind conditions.
You may already know the feeling of catching runners and linking waves, but opportunities to regularly train in quality downwind conditions can be limited in your local area. Without consistent conditions, coaching, and support, it can be difficult to take your skills to the next level.
That’s where this camp comes in.
Set in the world-class downwind environment of the Whitsundays, this camp gives you the chance to paddle in reliable wind-generated conditions with experienced coaches alongside you on the water providing live feedback throughout every run.
This is not just about getting down the run — it’s about refining technique, increasing efficiency, and learning how to maximise speed and glide in every condition.
Throughout the week, you’ll develop:
- Better wave connection and linking skills
- Improved surf ski control and manoeuvrability
- Faster acceleration onto runners
- Greater understanding of timing, positioning, and energy management
- More efficient paddling technique in open-water conditions
- Increased confidence paddling in stronger wind and sea states
With consistent downwind runs each day, you’ll have the opportunity to build rhythm, improve decision-making, and push your performance to a new level. Having a coach nearby on the water means immediate feedback via the VHF radio and practical adjustments that create rapid improvement.
By the end of the trip, you’ll be achieving faster runs, higher top speeds, and personal-best splits while feeling significantly more confident and capable in ocean conditions.
Most importantly, you’ll leave with the skills and confidence to safely enjoy downwind paddling more often in your local area — and a much deeper understanding of what makes great downwind paddlers fast, efficient, and smooth on the water.

Advanced Downwind Camp
Is built for paddlers chasing the ultimate downwind experience.
The Whitsundays is one of the best downwind training grounds in the world, with consistent south to south-east trade winds creating endless opportunities for fast, exciting runs. If you’re looking to push your limits, increase your top speeds, and experience long open-water downwinds in world-class conditions, this trip is for you.
With the advanced group, we can head further offshore and explore longer, more challenging runs that simply aren’t possible on beginner or intermediate trips. Whether you’re an experienced ocean racer or a passionate downwind addict, we’ll match the conditions and runs to your skill level and goals.
This trip is all about maximising water time and making the entire experience effortless.
We take care of the logistics so you can focus purely on paddling:
- Step-on, step-off boat support
- Surf skis and equipment transported for you
- Shuttle logistics handled daily
- Experienced guides and safety support throughout every run
All you need to do is paddle, learn, and enjoy the ride.
Over four action-packed days, you’ll develop:
- Faster linking and wave-reading skills
- Better line selection and ocean navigation
- More efficient ski handling at speed
- Greater confidence in open-ocean conditions
- Improved acceleration, glide, and energy management
- Higher top speeds and stronger overall performance
The coaching goes far beyond simply getting from point A to point B. We’ll teach you how to identify the best lines, use the ocean more efficiently, and understand the subtle decisions that separate good downwind paddlers from great ones.
The volume of quality downwind paddling you’ll experience on this trip is something most paddlers would normally take one or two years to achieve back home.
Just as importantly, the trip is an incredible experience off the water too. You’ll spend the week surrounded by like-minded paddlers, sharing stories, laughs, post drinks, dinners after unforgettable days on the ocean. The atmosphere is relaxed, supportive, and full of stoke.

Safety is our Priority
Our goal is to create the ultimate downwind paddling experience in the safest and most supportive environment possible, so you can focus on improving your skills, building confidence, and enjoying every run.
Before each session, we meet on the beach to walk through the day’s course plan in detail. We explain:
- The route and key landmarks
- The safest and fastest lines through the Whitsunday Passage
- Wind and water conditions
- Skills and techniques to focus on during the run
- What to expect throughout the paddle
Once on the water, you’ll be fully supported by two dedicated speedboats positioned on either side of the downwind line. Your job is simple — stay between the boats and you’ll always know you’re on the correct line.
Our coaches communicate with you live throughout the run via VHF radios, giving real-time feedback, guidance, and encouragement as conditions change. This on-water coaching is one of the most valuable parts of the experience, helping you improve quickly while feeling constantly connected and supported.
Even when the group naturally spreads out along the run, the radio communication and nearby support boats ensure everyone feels safe, comfortable, and part of the group at all times.
If you happen to fall out of your surf ski, a support boat is immediately nearby to assist if needed while you remount and continue your run confidently. If at any stage you feel tired, unsure, or simply need assistance, you can stop paddling, contact the coaches directly over the radio, and we’ll be there straight away.
Our commercial graded support boats are fully equipped with:
- Qualified first aid personnel
- First aid kits
- Defibrillators
- Safety and communication equipment
We also guide you through all practical aspects of the trip, including:
- Safe step-on and step-off procedures from the boats
- How to move safely around marinas and coral beaches
- Recommended footwear and clothing
- Ocean awareness and paddling safety skills
Most importantly, we take the time to work with each paddler individually. Every day we check in personally to ensure you are comfortable, confident, and getting the most out of the experience at your own pace and skill level.
The Whitsundays is one of the best downwind training environments in the world, and we’ve designed these trips so paddlers of all experience levels can enjoy it safely, confidently, and with complete support from start to finish.
Communication is key. Safety and progression are our motto.
