The Cook Strait Crossing 🇳🇿
After years in the planning we finally crossed the Cook Strait, from the South Island to the North Island of New Zealand.
This channel of water is notorious for strong winds, big swells and big tides and all three will never line up due to the geographical positioning. 

All the Kiwi locals told us to cross on a calm day, however, we wanted to push the envelope and downwind across to get the fastest time. We punched out a round North Brother Lighthouse and paddled across a 20 knot wind and swell for the first 16 kms. This was to put us in the middle of the channel and to be in line with  Wellington to then turn right downwind for the back 16km where we were gifted 35 knots of wind. When we had the wind and tide, we were averaging sub 4 mins per km and then with the same strong wind hit the infamous Karori Rip and were moving at 10 mins per km. 

After completing the channel crossing, we got back on the support boat and made the 6 hour journey back to Picton, where we sea sick the whole way and couldn’t believe that we were out there on our skinny little surf skis. 

There was a tremendous amount of planning and logistics to get the right people in the right locations, in a small window of opportunity that was presented. 

We feel incredibly privileged to have added this to our bucket list and I would like to thank @markcarnegie for making this possible and to his amazing sense of adventure. 

I also want to thank the legendary South African paddler @dawidmocke for this energy and willpower and to Mel Dixon for her courage.
